Four Components of Effective Leadership

Effective leadership in sport depends on the qualities of the leader, leadership style, situational factors and characteristics of the followers. But how these four interact that really important to determine what make a leader more effective. (^_^)

THE INTERACTIONAL APPROACH TO LEADERSHIP

The important of leadership style is clearly not enough to explain about successful leadership. Research started to consider additional factors. They distinguished between two categories of leadership behavior, namely behavior focused on:

§  Relationships with others, which requires communication and rapport with other , showing consideration  respect and trust.
§  Task oriented, which requires deciding priorities, identifying weaknesses, creating plans, assigning individuals to tasks and keeping them on task.

Relationship with others develops interpersonal relationships, keep open lines of communication, and maintain positive social interactions. Everyone is involved and feeling good whereas task-oriented leaders primarily work to get the task done and meet their objectives. People can change from a relationship-oriented style to a task-oriented style and vice versa depending on the situation. If a coach feels more comfortable with one type of leadership style than other, he should seek out situations where this style would be more effective.

Thus, effective leadership was seen as depending on other factors such as the particular situation at the time and the type of people who were being ‘led’. In other words, an interactional approach developed.

Bercita-citalah..

Jangan takut punyai cita-cita…bercita-citalah..

(A.H.Nayyar)

“Sungguh saya memiliki jiwa perindu. Jiwa merindukan kepimpinan maka saya mendapatkannya. Merindukan khilafah maka saya meraihnya. Dan sekarang jiwa itu merindukan syurga.” ( Umar Abdul Aziz)

Kini kita semakin jauh melangkah mengejar cita-cita.

(Hassan Al Banna)

Jom fokuskan diri untuk meraih cita-cita (^_^)

Behavioral theories of leadership

Praise to Allah SWT giving us to stay alive in order to perform  and shows good behavior to others.(^_^)
this entry is about behavioral theories in leadership. So if you want to be a successful leader, you have to learn some skill of leadership.

This behavioral approach examines the behaviors of leaders and their relationship to the productivity and satisfaction of group members. This approach views the successful leader as one who displays particular behaviors and proposes that leadership is a skill which can be learned. According to social learning theory, the individual learns leadership by observing others who are leaders then copying their behavior. If this behavior is rewarded, then the observer is likely to repeat it, so he or she gradually learns how to be leader.
For instance, a newcomer to a team watches how the captain handles a disagreement between players. When the captain is successful in her efforts, the newcomer will remember how the disagreement was handled and is likely to use this approach herself. This is called vicarious reinforcement because seeing someone else being successful after a particular behavior makes it more likely to be repeated. The newcomer may copy the captain’s behavior when there is disagreement between teammates and she experiences success, will continue to use and develop these skills.
In addition, based on previous studies conducted by researchers at the Ohio State University (Halpin & Winer, 1957), there are two leader behavior characteristics emerged that related to group effectiveness: consideration and initiating structure.

Consideration in work relationships involves mutual trust and respect for attention to the feelings and ideas of others. Leader identified as having high consideration behavior demonstrated effective communication and rapport with others.
Initiating structure is reflected in behaviours that serve to define and structure individual roles toward goal attainment. Leader who identified as behaving with high initiating structure were active in directing group activities, communicating, scheduling, and experimenting new ideas..

Additional researchers have examined sports leadership from a behavioral perspective. Hoffman (2003) mentioned that athletes reported work ethic, knowledge, and preparation as the most important coaching behaviors.
In short these theories have been continued to be used in order to understand leadership in sport setting.
