What is sport psychology?

Why do marathon runners continue despite pain? Why does someone prefer rock-climbing to hockey? Are there different reasons for competing? Why do they want to improve their skill? Are successful athletes distinguished by certain key personality characteristics? What motivate people to participate in physical activity (sport)? Why are some people so motivated to achieve competitive success? There are many important questions will be answered when we learn in sport psychology. (^_^)

As individuals, we all know that everyone is different from one another, yet we have many things in common with others. Through learning sport psychology, we will able to understand people regarding their personality characteristics, individual orientations and emotions that affect to performance and psychological development in sport, physical education and exercise settings. Furthermore, learning sport psychology helps us to understand motivation in a variety of physical activity contexts that also include achievement motivation, competitiveness and attribution. It is very important to enhance a person’s level of motivation when he or she experienced anxiety or stress that may affect performance.

Simply stated, sport psychology is the scientific study of people and their behaviors in sport and exercise activities and the practical application of that knowledge. Therefore, most people study sport psychology with two objectives in their mind which are to understand how psychological factors affects an individual’s physical performance and to understand how participation in sport affects a person’s psychological development, health, and well-being.
